Position Summary:
The Senior Director of Philanthropy at Please Touch Museum is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team and a principal representative of Philanthropy & Advancement. The role is responsible for setting the strategic direction of and goals for the frontline fundraising team, which includes annual, individual, corporate, and institutional giving for general operating and designated purposes, and donor engagement. At the general direction of the Chief Philanthropy & Advancement Officer (CPAO), the Senior Director will oversee the tactics and implementation of PTM’s fundraising strategy, foregrounding donor engagement and fund development predominately in support of operations and programs. They will be critical in translating organization-wide strategies into fundraising priorities and donor opportunities which will aid in growing contributed revenue. This position has three direct reports: the Director of Annual Giving & Donor Engagement, the Director of Institutional Giving, and the Development Specialist. Leadership Responsibilities:
Sets strategy and goals for the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of donors and donor prospects of unrestricted contributed and purpose-designated revenue.
- Determines and crafts fundraising priorities by translating PTM’s operations and programmatic funding needs into donor opportunities in consultation with the CPAO, CEO, and senior leaders.
- Directs the department’s strategy for prospect solicitation; partners with teams including Museum Learning and operations in prospect development and solicitation planning.
- Consistently drives and manages strategic, personalized engagement with donors. Strategies reflect the intersection between prospects’ interests and priorities and the Museum’s needs and goals.
- Convene and lead strategy meetings for prospects with relationship managers and other staff integral to advancing these relationships.
Manages a fundraising program comprised of the full range of contributed revenue programs, including responsibility for donor relations, stewardship, and philanthropy marketing activities.
- Provides expert-level management of individual donor benefit programs and institutional giving, as well as primary direction of corporate sponsorship opportunities.
- Provides essential collaboration to the CPAO in setting strategic fund development priorities and identifying giving opportunities, determining strategies for donor events, and helping develop the case for support for PTM’s initiatives.
- Works with colleagues in Marketing and Communications, Museum Learning, Events, and IT to develop tools, engagement opportunities, and marketing materials that support the frontline fundraising team.
- Collaborates with the CPAO and Senior Leadership Team to ensure we are following best practices and developing effective processes and procedures for philanthropy.
Manages a staff comprised of frontline portfolio managers and philanthropy operations staff.
- Manages a team of three direct reports with responsibility for annual giving and donor engagement.
- Develops annual performance metrics and goals for annual giving, corporate, and institutional giving gift officers.
- Leads team meetings and annual team retreats.
- Leads regular strategy sessions with frontline fundraisers.
- Serves as a member of the Museum’s Senior Leadership Team and an essential thought partner to the CPAO.
Conceives, creates, develops, implements, evaluates, and manages philanthropy programs and strategies to meet predetermined goals and objectives, ensuring predetermined goals are met.
- Collaborates with the CPAO, CEO, and senior leadership across the Museum to translate and implement department-wide strategies into campaign priorities and donor strategies.
- Continually (re)deploys resources to reach goals and to serve the department to maximum effect in a complex and ever-changing fundraising environment.
Essential Functions:
- Develop and execute a strategic, comprehensive fundraising plan that ensures effective results and meets both annual and long-term financial goals.
- Successfully lead the development team in securing $3.5+ million in annual support, in addition to principal, endowed, and capital gifts managed by the CPAO and CEO.
- Play a central role in implementing the strategy to cultivate, solicit, and close gifts, taking specialized responsibility for developing PTM’s corporate sponsorship strategy.
- Represent the Museum at key donor and foundation meetings and events.
- Establish revenue plans and implement performance goals, objectives, and action plans; generate buy-in around a data-driven approach to goal setting and benchmarking.
- Produce detailed reports on the Museum’s fundraising for the CPAO, CEO, and Board, with support from the Database Manager and Development Specialist.
- Manage and mentor a department of three full-time staff with the opportunity to expand the department based on successful fund development.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of 10 years of proven fundraising experience, preferably in the education, museum, or cultural sectors, with five or more years of demonstrated success at the director level of a similarly sized organization.
- Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree in relevant field preferred.
- Experience in planning, implementing, and managing comprehensive fundraising campaigns, including experience with comprehensive campaigns.
- Demonstrated experience with multiple categories of giving such as annual giving, major gifts, foundation, government, and corporate support.
- A demonstrated capacity to lead, manage, and motivate a team.
- Goal-oriented campaign strategist who can create and execute new giving opportunities and programs expanding the Museum’s financial resources.
- Self-starter who can work independently and collaborate with colleagues and volunteer leadership.
- A confident and effective relationship builder who enjoys meeting with new and existing supporters.
- Expert written and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies.
- Expert skills in making persuasive and compelling presentations.
- Expert organizational, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
- Expert project and program management skills, including skills in setting and meeting goals and objectives within budget and time constraints.
- Familiarity with the Philadelphia philanthropic community is a plus.
- Expert knowledge of donor CRMs required, Blackbaud Altru database experience is a plus.

- Must have PA Act 153 clearances (PA criminal history, FBI fingerprints, and PA Child Abuse) completed prior to hire.
