Admissions Assistant – Full Time

Position Summary:

Admissions Assistants are responsible for providing exceptional customer service to all Museum visitors. They must be knowledgeable about all Museum products including ticket sales, membership, discounts, and programs. Admissions Assistants serve as ambassadors for the Museum, greet visitors and answer questions about the Museum.

This position is part of the AFSCME Local 397 bargaining unit.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Greet visitors and assist with ticket and/or membership sales. Answer visitor questions in person, phone, and email regarding Museum exhibits and programs. Provide exceptional service to all visitors.
  • Maintain awareness of all products including but not limited to memberships, special events, and promotions.
  • Reconcile cash, credit cards, coupons before and after each shift.
  • Operate Museum’s Carousel; ensure safety procedures are being followed by all visitors; clean/sanitize between rides and take payment as needed for carousel riders.
  • Ensure that the Museum’s rules and safety standard requirements are always followed. Know and understand the emergency action plans.
  • Assist with Museum projects during downtime or as needed.
  • Actively participate in all training classes and properly implement new skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required. Associate degree, or Vocational or technical school degree preferred.
  • Bi-lingual, preferred.
  • At least 2 years of experience in customer service and sales; working in a museum or similar environment a plus.
  • Equivalent combination of experience and/or education that has led to the development of comparable skills, abilities, and perspectives.
  • Ability to communicate with visitors, coworkers & supervisor via email. Strong telephone etiquette — with a clear, concise, pleasant speaking manner. Excellent listening and comprehension skills.
  • Must have cash-handling and POS system experience, basic math and computer skills are required.
  • Experience working with a ticketing system strongly preferred.
  • Ability to multitask and work in a positive environment and be a team player.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Experience effectively speaking with children and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Flexible, can easily adapt to new policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondences, and memos.
  • CPR and First Aid Certified preferred.
  • Availability to work on weekends, evenings, and holidays in addition to weekdays.

  • Must have PA Act 153 clearances (PA criminal history, FBI fingerprints, and PA Child Abuse) completed prior to hire.
  • All employees are required to have COVID-19 vaccination, and flu vaccination, as a term and condition of employment.

  • Able to remain stationary for extended periods of time.
  • Is frequently required to stand and walk; will frequently be required to move from one position to another.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, i.e., pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, squatting, kneeling, and climbing.
  • Required to talk and hear.
  • Able to see and read computer screens.
  • Able to read fine print and/or normal size print.
  • Ability to walk up and down flights of stairs; and stand for periods of time every day.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 10 – 20 pounds.
  • Ability to climb stairs.
  • Ability to grasp objects, type, pick up objects, move objects or hold objects.


  • This job is performed in a public and office environment. The employee must be able to focus on assigned tasks where activity and interruptions are constant and demanding.
  • Visitor facing environment.
  • The individual performing this job must be comfortable in an environment where people are coming and going regularly.
  • The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate but ongoing, noise level may be overstimulating at times.
